Beauty of Azerbaijan’s city of Ganja (29 photos)
Azerbaijan’s city of Ganja is the country’s second largest city by area and by population. Great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi was born in Ganja. His tomb in Ganja is the place of pilgrimage and worship of poets, located on the southwestern outskirts of the city.
Ganja was called Yelizavetpol in the early 20th century and later Kirovabad during the Soviet times. It was returned its old name of Ganja in 1989. Ganja also held the status of the capital of Azerbaijan for three months in 1918 when the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was formed.
As a result of the research conducted by the specialists from the Archaeological Centre of Egypt, it was revealed that Ganja has existed for over four millennia.
