The times of the Nagorno-Karabakh war (50 photos)
The war in Nagorno Karabakh region of Azerbaijan took many innocent lives, as the two South Caucasus republics clashed in the bloodiest war, which started right before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The conflict was blown wide open after Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan in 1988. As a result of the war, Armenia occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory – the Nagorno Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994, and the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. have been holding peace talks ever since. Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
